Know Your CannaTerms: Terpenes
Updated: Jan 21
Whether you’re pursuing cannabis as a consumer or as an entrepreneur, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the vast terminology surrounding this plant. Point Seven Group is all about making the oftentimes overwhelming cannabis industry more approachable. This week on “Know Your Cannaterms” we’ll give you some information on terpenes.
Terpenes give cannabis its aromatic effects, but they are also the building blocks of any plant, herb or fruit aroma and flavor. These oils, derived from the same glands as Cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, are secreted by cannabis plants and produce distinct smells. They also have different effects on the body when they are consumed. Some terpenes promote relaxation, such as Myrcene found in strains like Blue Dream or Northern Lights. Others can counteract THC effects - making you more alert - such as Alpha Pinene found in strains like OG Kush. There are a variety of terpenes within a single strain, giving the plant a specific scent and flavor. Varying amounts and types of terpenes combined with cannabinoids create the synergistic effect in cannabis that we all know and love.
